What makes a good zoo?
People love rankings of "The 10 Best" hospitals, doctors, cities, neighborhoods, colleges, museums and, of course, Zoos! But rankings can differ based on who does the judging and what standards are important to them. Modern zoos are expected to play a variety of roles that would have been unthinkable a hundred years ago. Education, conservation, research, breeding and entertainment, all the while providing a safe and wholesome life for captive animals. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums has accredited almost 300 zoos in the USA as meeting its standards. But, sometimes even these zoos run into problems, when limitations of funding, space, or management come to the fore. Have you ever witnessed zoo practices that made you uncomfortable? What should we as consumers look for as we decide which zoos to visit and support?

Zoos are a huge dilemma for me since my grandkids adore them and I know for breeding/conservation purposes some need to exist yet; they do not feel right. Some zoos are no doubt better than others but I have never been to a zoo that at least some of the animals did not looked depressed. Perhaps its an unfounded bias but I have no problem with aquariums.
Animals are supposed to be free. Cages are off. Chains are off.
If you say you like/love animals, act according: follow a vegan diet; adopt, don't buy; don't buy leather or fur products; don't buy cosmetics or cleaning supplies from companies that test on animals; don't go to the circus or zoo.
It is always very nice to see animals who are cheerful and in a good mood, plus the condition of cages is extremely important. It is disgusting to see dirty and smelly places in the zoos. I guess that are the most important things that visitors pay attention to while visiting.

I think best Zoo is the place where Animals are provided safe,wholesome life and enough space.Food and cleanliness are most important.The zoo authority should take proper care of Animals.

Yes you are right ranking can differ from judge to judge and also by the standard of their judging.Modern zoos are expected to play a variety of things which one have not thought for.Mostly it is seen that the cages are not properly maintained,safety measures are not taken,animals are not in cheerful mood,etc.Since there are enormous ways through which one can give a different way to zoo.
Modern zoos have come up with many good facilities for Animals.They provide Zoo like environment,healthy food and clean environment.This will definitely change the perspective of Zoos.
I had a suggestions to build up a mini-zoo in pharmacy schools in california so that the students may proud of their school.
No animal should be kept in cages,or have chains on their necks.They should be able to roam around freely in their environment.They shouldn't have to take animals out of their homes,though.
